Even Alexander seems merely to be going through prescribed motions, and Tarr strangely ignores what many readers will readers will surely know-that Alexander will not live long after his Egyptian adventure. The march toward Egypt generates little tension, save for a few moments during the sieges of Tyre and Gaza. But circumstances and their contrary natures keep them apart for most of the book, and their turgid romance takes up too much space for too little purpose. At the same time she slowly falls in love with Niko, one of Alexander's soldiers. ![]() We have new and used copies available, in 3 editions - starting at 1.45. Although Tarr ( Alamut The Dagger and the Cross ) brings her customary depth of research to her topic-Alexander the Great in Egypt-and although the tale of Alexander's conquests carries a certain measure of ingrained drama, her efforts here fall flat. ![]()

![]() ![]() The current theory, generally accepted by scholars and historians, ties the departure of Hamelin’s children to the Ostsiedlung, in which a number of Germans from the Holy Roman Empire left their homes to colonize Eastern Europe. Other theories liken him to figures like Nicholas of Cologne, who is said to have lured away a great number of children on a disastrous Children’s Crusade (a disastrous Crusade by European Christians to expel Muslims from the Holy Land said to have taken place in 1212). Theories have been proposed suggesting that the Pied Piper is a symbol of the children’s death by plague or catastrophe. In any case, the rats were first added to the story in a version from 1559, and are absent from earlier accounts. Origins of Fairy Tales from Around the WorldĪlthough research has been conducted for centuries, no explanation for the historical event is agreed upon. ![]() ![]() ![]() Perhaps where Princeless succeeds most is in portraying characters who not only play against genre expectations, but are appealing enough in their own right. ![]() And the occasional attempts to cater to female comic readers and gamers usually blindly fall under the same criticisms. We live in an odd media climate, and much like cinema, the comic medium is undeniably dominated by the male gaze. After she informs Sparky, the ineffectual dragon which guards her tower, that his role in life is to essentially be beheaded by a knight in shining armour, the two head off to rescue Adrienne’s other sisters. The problem is, Adrienne neither wants nor needs rescuing. The series follows Princess Adrienne, who, along with her five older sisters, was locked in a tower by her tyrant father on her sixteenth birthday, in the hope that some gallant knight will prove himself worthy of the throne by rescuing one of them. It’s also very, very funny – as was the FCD offering when read following this trade of the first 4-issue miniseries. ![]() Action Lab’s charming, Eisner-nominated all-ages series is a much needed parody of the gender roles played in fairy tales and high fantasy fiction. ![]() I first encountered Princeless a few weeks ago during Free Comic Day, and gave up reading the brief promo a few pages in. Comedy in comics is not so much a difficult thing to execute as it is to establish we need to know a character’s quirks before we find them funny. ![]() ![]() ![]() While researching a book on the conquest of Granada, he gained access to the Alhambra Palace, which had fallen into disrepair after years of neglect. "Upon his 1829 arrival in Granada, Spain, American author Washington Irving was immediately charmed by the city's beauty and picturesque qualities. As Irving notes in his Preface, ""It was my endeavor scrupulously to depict its half Spanish, half Oriental character its mixture of the heroic, the poetic, and the grotesque to revive the traces of grace and beauty fast fading from its walls to record the regal and chivalrous traditions concerning those who once trod its courts and the whimsical and superstitious legends of the motley race now burrowing among its ruins."" A must-read for modern-day visitors to the Alhambra, this edition presents a fascinating selection of Irving's observations and stories." The result is this captivating collection of essays, sketches, and tales. ![]() During his sojourn, the writer became increasingly enamored of the grand palace and its wealth of history and folklore. Irving became a guest at the ancient fortress, where he found himself in the company of several colorful inhabitants. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The culminating drama-the explosive heart of the book-is Caro's illumination, based on extraordinarily detailed investigation, of one of the great political mysteries of the century. ![]() This multifaceted book carries the President-to-be from the aftermath of his devastating defeat in his 1941 campaign for the Senate-the despair it engendered in him, and the grueling test of his spirit that followed as political doors slammed shut-through his service in World War II (and his artful embellishment of his record) to the foundation of his fortune (and the actual facts behind the myth he created about it). Here, Johnson's almost mythic personality-part genius, part behemoth, at once hotly emotional and icily calculating-is seen at its most nakedly ambitious. What is likable about this character? The author legit has her complain for the first 3 chapters because how she hasn’t eaten in 4 days….4 days….yeah okay….very realistic considering that still didn’t shut her up. Instant eye roll at her “tiny pouch” of a stomach she describes. “I’ll never have an 8 pack because I JuSt LoVe cHoCoLaTe SOoo mUch”. ![]() The author tries so hard to make the character relatable and just fails miserably. Why does Oil, or whatever her name is, sound like she’s on the verge of going into war and making her last speech. I’m confused and I had difficulty remembering who is who and what is even going on. The narrator sounds like she’s reading slam poetry the entire time, holy crap it drove me crazy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Suddenly, two texts from her mother pierce the fray: "Something has gone wrong," and "How soon can you get here?" This book tells, in her own words, both her struggle to get to her lofty position and something of her belief structure. She is also an inspiration, not just to women, not just to the Afghan population, but to every human being. You may by now, be,reasonably, asking what this has to do with a book review: the amazing thing that this book did was to turn me, for a couple of hours, into a young Afghan lady.Fawzia Koofi is the speaker of the Afghan Parliament. This is one of the most amazing: I have told you my age, I will now also divulge that I am a white middle class (OK very much lower middle class - poor as a church mouse) Englishman who has travelled no further than France and Belgium. Needless to say then, that many many books have found their way into my hands. I am 56 years old my mother taught me to read before I was knee high to the proverbial grasshopper - and I took to it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The dual POV narration made this story even more fun for the audience. Yes, I did that already and I don’t have any regrets despite having so many threats of losing everything I have. Everyone knows it quite better that it is not possible for any attorney to ever think about sleeping with his client, let alone doing it in real. A lot of people might even say forbidden. But, Grace for that thing was off-limits. Drowning to Breathe could be a very good example of her work Similarly, it is imperative to mention. She writes contemporary romance novels which are emotional and sometimes full of sex as well. Since then, I was looking to have a lot more than what I experienced that night. All of Me is a contemporary romance novel that is the second installment in the Confessions of the Heart Series. It was just one glance and then one-touch which led to that one beautiful night.
